The CDC now recommends wearing a face mask as one of the most critical measures for prevention of covid19. This is important because there is evidence that the virus can be easily spread by air, making it more contagious than previously anticipated. But with so many varieties of masks, a pivotal question is – which mask is most effective for prevention of covid19? Here’s our guide:

The CDC now recommends wearing a face mask as one of the most critical measures for prevention of covid19. This is important because there is evidence that the virus can be easily spread by air, making it more contagious than previously anticipated. But with so many varieties of masks, a pivotal question is – which mask is most effective for prevention of covid19? Here’s our guide:

  • N95 Respirator: These are certified, tight-fitting masks capable of filtering out 95% airborne particles. These masks are critically recommended for healthcare workers and first responders. It is advised that these masks are changed after every patient encounter. Medical professionals can easily buy these masks here.
  • Surgical masks: These are certified masks for professional use. These are usually loose-fitting, but provide decent protection against large droplets etc. These are suited for patients and healthcare workers. To ensure tight protection and prevent fogging of glasses: ensure that the mask is properly tightened around the nose, but it can be left a little loose near the chin/neck. Alternatively, the elastic bands can be tied in cross-pattern for tighter fitting. These are disposable masks and should be changed routinely. Medical professionals can easily buy these masks here
  • Cloth masks: These are recommended for general public use. Cloth masks are usually loose-fitting, re-usable and provide decent protection for day-to-day activities such as buying groceries. These masks should be carefully washed before re-using.

Proper use of masks:

The virus is known to deposit on the surface of masks, making it a possible source of infection. Here are some guidelines to make the best use of your masks:

  1. Know your mask: It is important to know the kind of mask you are working with. You need to know about its relative fit, the surface of mask that should be exposed outside, whether it is elastic, where is the filter placed, information about filtration and what are the limitations. Each mask can protect only up to a certain amount of time, based on how it is used (see information above).
  2. Always wear the mask with the correct side facing out. This is the surface that will be exposed to the outside world. Make sure you place the mask on the table with this side facing the table or any surface. It is best to directly dispose off the mask without allowing it to interact with any surface.
  3. Do not touch the surface of the mask. This is true for both surfaces – that may be exposed to your face or the outside world. Wash your hands after taking off/disposing of the mask.
  4. Tie the mask tightly enough. You do not want any (unfiltered) air to escape out or come in. In case of a surgical mask, there is a strip of a flexible band that goes on your nose – press that against your nose for a tight fit. Pull the mask onto your chin for proper protection. This also prevents fogging of glasses.
  5. Wash, wash, wash! If you are using a cloth mask, wash it with soap or detergent at high temperature and dry it completely. Wash your hands before and after handling masks at all times!
